# SEO for garages: workshop bookings from drivers in your area.

A car that won't start on a Monday morning, an orange warning light on the dashboard, a crumpled wing in a car park: every time, the driver gets out their phone. There they first find auto centres, national chains and online quote sites. I work on your Google Business Profile and your website so your workshop is among the answers, with what you repair and the communes your customers come from.

## What is SEO for a garage?

SEO for a garage is the set of adjustments that make a garage or body shop show up on Google when a local driver looks for a service, a repair or bodywork after a knock. It rests on an accurate Google Business Profile, one website page per family of repairs and reviews describing real repairs. It's judged by the number of workshop bookings, not website traffic.

The problem

## What holds independent garages back.

Symptom 1

### The first page belongs to the chains

For “garage” followed by a town, auto centres, networks and quote comparison sites take up almost the whole page. They have budgets you don't. An independent workshop doesn't overtake them on their turf; it has to pick its own.

Symptom 2

### “All makes” doesn't set anyone apart

Every garage writes it. A driver looking to get an automatic gearbox repaired, a van serviced or a classic car back on the road doesn't know you do it. They go to whoever wrote it down.

Symptom 3

### Bodywork comes through insurers

After a claim, drivers usually follow the address they're given over the phone, without looking further. An independent body shop needs to be found before that call, with repairs to show.

An audit, for real

## What I spot in thirty seconds on a garage's website.

The site below doesn't exist, but its flaws do: they're the five I spot most often. Hover over a number.

Your all-makes specialist

Servicing, repairs and bodywork: quality at a fair price for your vehicle.

**Fig. 2.** Fictional site, reconstructed. Any resemblance to yours would be a good reason to call me.

1. *1***A page title with no commune and no speciality**“Car garage” describes every garage in France. “Garage in Châteauneuf: clutches, timing belts, automatic gearboxes” describes yours.
2. *2***Everything filed under “Our services”**A driver with a warning light on looks for the word “diagnostics”. One with a dent looks for “bodywork”. Each should see their word in the menu.
3. *3***“Specialist” and “all makes” in the same sentence**The two words contradict each other. Choose what you repair that the retail park sends elsewhere, then put it in your title.
4. *4***A supercar from a stock photo library**No customer brings you that model. Show your lift, your diagnostic kit and an everyday car.
5. *5***Three blocks that say the same thing**“All makes” three times, and no link to an explanation. Each block should open a page with the process and how you price it.

What your customers type

## What drivers type before choosing a garage.

Six plausible searches for a mechanics and bodywork workshop. They're examples. The audit establishes the ones for your area, with their volumes.

*1*“garage” followed by the name of their commune
: The search happens on a phone and the map answers first. Three profiles show up. Yours needs the right category, exact hours and photos of the workshop.

*2*“engine warning light on what to do”
: He can still drive and he's worried. He wants to know if he can carry on and who can read the fault. A diagnostics page explains your equipment, the process and how you announce the price.

*3*“clutch price” with their car model
: He already has a quote elsewhere, or dreads getting one. A clutch page describes what the job includes, what makes the amount vary and how long the car will be off the road.

*4*“bodywork scratched door quote”
: The damage is visible and he's unsure about going through his insurance. He looks for before-and-after photos. He needs a bodywork page with your repairs, sorted by type of damage.

*5*“automatic gearbox garage” followed by their town
: It's a specialist search. Few workshops handle this fault and few say so. If you do, a separate page brings you customers willing to drive a fair distance.

*6*“repairs after MOT”
: He's come out of an inspection with a list of faults to fix. He wants a workshop that reads that document and quotes quickly. A short page saying how you handle these requests is enough.

What works

## The five levers for a garage or body shop.

Lever 1

### The workshop's Google Business Profile

For a garage, the map brings in a good share of calls. I check the main category, secondary categories such as bodywork, the hours and the phone number. I add photos of the lift, the paint booth and the front of the building, so people recognise the place when they arrive.

Lever 2

### One page per family of repairs

Servicing, brakes, timing belts, clutches, air conditioning, diagnostics, bodywork, paintwork: each family has its own searches. One page per family tells Google which question you answer. A single page called “Our services” ranks for none of them.

Lever 3

### Your speciality, in black and white

Against the chains, it's your strong point. Vans, automatic gearboxes, hybrids, classic cars, motorhomes, a brand you know well: I help you pick one or two real specialities and give each a full page.

Lever 4

### Prices explained

Drivers are afraid of the bill. You don't have to publish a price for every model. Explaining your hourly rate, what a quote contains and the approval you ask for before any extra work addresses that fear. For price display, your obligations remain those of your profession and I don't rewrite them.

Lever 5

### Reviews that name the repair

A “good garage” review carries little weight. A review mentioning the timing belt replaced within the day describes your work. I set up a review request at key handover, with a question that draws out that level of detail.

What costs dearly

## The mistakes I spot on garage websites.

Mistake 1

### A sports car on the home page

It comes from a stock photo library and you don't repair them. A photo of your workshop, with an ordinary car on the lift, tells the truth and inspires trust.

Mistake 2

### Profile hours never corrected

Saturday closing, August holidays, May bank holiday weekends: the profile still shows the hours from three years ago. A customer who finds the shutter down doesn't come back.

Mistake 3

### Mechanics and bodywork on the same page

They're two different customers, with two different worries. Each should find their own way in from the menu.

Mistake 4

### No way to request an appointment in the evening

Many drivers search when the workshop is closed. A form asking for the model, year and problem lets you call back the next day with an answer.

The method

## What I put in place for a garage.

Four steps. I start with the profile, because it works without waiting for the website to be redone.

1. **The workshop on the map.** Categories, hours, photos of the premises and direct number are checked one by one.
2. **Specialities.** Together we choose the jobs you want to see come in more often.
3. **The pages.** One page per family of repairs, with your explanations and photos of your workshop.
4. **Bookings.** Every month, I track calls and requests by type of repair.

One-minute test

## Is SEO right for you?

Five frank questions to find out whether support makes sense in your situation. Sometimes the answer is no, and I'll tell you.

Close to home

## Garages in Charente.

Charente is organised around Angoulême and Cognac, with small towns like Jarnac, Barbezieux, Ruffec and Confolens. In town, people search for a garage by neighbourhood or type of repair. In a small town, they type the name of the commune and check how far away the workshop is. The Newp agency is based in the département, which I know well, and we can meet there.

### The village garage

In a small town, your customers already know you. A newcomer, though, searches for “garage” followed by the name of the commune. A complete profile and a page naming the neighbouring communes introduce you before their first call.

### Near the retail parks of both towns

Near the retail parks of Angoulême and Cognac, people often search for a specific service, with the town's name. An independent based nearby should write down what sets them apart: the tricky fault, the gearbox, the classic car.

### Vans for tradespeople and farms

Tradespeople, winegrowers, farmers: a professional who drives a van or a pick-up looks for a workshop close to their work. If you service these vehicles, say so on a page for professionals, with your usual turnaround times.

Beyond Google

## What AI changes for a garage.

A driver now describes their breakdown to an AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Mistral in their own words: “my car judders when pulling away and the clutch slips on hills, is it serious, and which garage near Cognac can deal with it?”. They get an explanation of the likely fault, an idea of the work involved and sometimes the names of two or three workshops.

Those names come from what the AI has been able to read: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, drivers' forums, directories. A workshop that writes “clutches and flywheels, cars and vans, Cognac area” gives it a sentence to reuse. “All-makes mechanics” gives it nothing. I align these sources with one another, and from time to time I check what AIs say about garages in your area.

Question asked to an AIMy clutch is slipping and I live near Cognac. Which garage can replace it quickly?

Answer

Three workshops come up for this replacement:

1. **Our client**— independent garage: clutches and flywheels on cars and vans, written quote before work, time off the road stated, reviews mentioning the job.
2. — auto centre in a retail park, routine servicing, clutches on request.
3. — online quote site, workshop assigned after the request.

Three typical cases

## Three garage scenarios.

Three cases put together for illustration. None describes an existing garage. Yours will get its own plan after the audit.

### A village garage with two mechanics

Its customers are getting older and newcomers go to the retail park.

1. Complete the Google Business Profile with hours, photos and services.
2. Write a home page that names the village and the surrounding communes.
3. Ask for a review at every key handover for a year.

### An independent body shop and paint specialist

Its business depends on claims sent its way by a few insurers.

1. Create a page per type of repair: dents, scratches, hail, bumpers.
2. Publish before-and-after photos, with time off the road.
3. Add a form that accepts photos of the damage.

### A workshop specialising in automatic gearboxes

It gets cars from across the département, but only through referrals.

1. Write a page per common symptom, with its workshop explanations.
2. State where its customers come from and how dropping off the vehicle works.
3. Put the speciality in the home page title and on the profile.

In practice

## What you get.

- An accurate Google Business Profile, with photos of your workshop
- A page for each family of repairs you want to fill
- A page dedicated to your speciality, written in your workshop language
- A booking form that asks for the model and the problem
- A monthly report of calls and requests, by type of repair

Pricing

## How much does an SEO consultant cost?

The fee depends on four things. I give you a precise amount after a free first thirty-minute conversation.

- The size of the site: ten pages or ten thousand
- The competition on your queries
- What you can do in-house, and what needs producing for you
- The pace you want

FAQ

## SEO and garages: your questions.

Can I really get ahead of the auto centres on Google?

For “cheap service”, no, and I won't promise you that. For your commune, your speciality and the faults you know how to fix, it's possible. These searches are fewer, but they bring in drivers who need what you do.

Should I publish my prices on the website?

Publish what you can stand by: your hourly rate, the price of a simple job, how you put a quote together. For the price display your profession requires, apply your usual rules. The website repeats the same information, without inventing any.

I'm an agent for a brand. Is that an asset or a drawback?

It's an asset with owners of that brand, provided you write about it within the limits your contract sets. For other vehicles, a separate page makes it clear that you take them too.

Online quote sites charge me a commission. Should I leave them?

Not straight away. For a few months, note what each source brings you and what it costs. Once your own requests come in, you decide with figures.

How should I reply to a negative review about a bill?

Calmly, in public, with the facts: the signed quote, the work done, your offer to talk it over at the workshop. Readers judge your reply as much as the complaint. I give you an outline; you keep control of the wording.

I do mechanics and bodywork. One website or two?

One website, with two clear sections. Two websites mean twice the work for trust split in two. On the Google Business Profile, both activities appear in the categories and services.

My customers are elderly and don't go online. What's the point?

Those customers will stay with you. The question is about the ones arriving: newcomers, young drivers, your customers' children. They search on their phones before calling.

Should I talk about MOT inspections on my website?

You can say that you prepare vehicles and fix the faults found, if that's the case. I don't write any rules about the inspection itself: those rules change and aren't your workshop's responsibility.

How many photos are needed, and who takes them?

About ten to start with: the front of the building, reception, the lifts, the paint booth, the team if they agree. A recent phone is enough. Blur customers' number plates before publishing.

How long before bookings go up?

I don't give a firm timeframe. Profile fixes generally work before website changes, and a new workshop page takes several months to find its place. You follow progress in the monthly report.
