# SEO for photographers: enquiries received directly, in your speciality and your region.

A couple looking for their wedding photographer first finds supplier directories and matchmaking platforms. A business that wants portraits comes across stock photo libraries and chain studios. These sites are powerful; I won't tell you otherwise. Yet they show neither your eye nor the places where you've already worked. Google reads text, and most photographers' websites contain almost none. That's where I help you.

## What is SEO for a photographer?

SEO for a photographer is the work that makes their website and Google Business Profile show up when a couple, a family or a business in their region is looking for an imaging professional. It means separating specialities onto distinct pages, publishing full shoots with their venue and context, describing each important photo and lightening the files so pages load fast. It is judged by the number of quote requests that match what the photographer wants to do.

The problem

## What holds photographers back on Google.

Symptom 1

### Directories and platforms come before you

On “wedding photographer” and a department, the top results are directories listing dozens of profiles. You can be on them, but there you're compared on price and three thumbnails. Your site needs to receive some of these visitors without going through them.

Symptom 2

### A site made of images that Google can't read

A full-screen gallery pleases the eye. For a search engine, it's an almost empty page: no title, no place, no caption. It can't guess that these photos were taken at a wedding near Cognac.

Symptom 3

### Everything rests on social media

Your posts drop out of the feed within days and don't belong to you. Someone looking for a photographer for next year doesn't scroll back through a feed. They type a search, and they need to find you there.

An audit, for real

## What I see in thirty seconds on a photographer's website.

The site below doesn't exist, but its flaws do: they're the five I spot most often. Hover over a number.

Capturing the moment

A passionate photographer, I capture your emotions and turn them into memories.

**Fig. 2.** Fictional site, reconstructed. Any resemblance to yours would be a good reason to call me.

1. *1***A title reduced to “Photographer”**The speciality and region are unknown. “Wedding photographer in Charente: coverage in Cognac and Angoulême” matches what a couple types.
2. *2***A single “Portfolio” for everything**Weddings, portraits and business are three different trades for your visitors. Give each its own menu item.
3. *3***“Capturing the moment”**This phrase appears on many fellow photographers' sites. Replace it with what you photograph and where you work.
4. *4***A full-screen image, without a word**It is beautiful and it is heavy. With no caption or description, Google doesn't know what it shows or where it was taken.
5. *5***“Services: on request”**Visitors know neither what you offer nor your starting price. Describe your packages, even briefly.

What your customers type

## What a client types when looking for a photographer.

Here are six example searches for a photographer based in the regions. They don't apply to everyone. Your list will depend on your specialities and will be drawn up during the audit.

*1*“wedding photographer” followed by a département or a town
: Couples often book well in advance and compare several websites. A complete wedding page shows how you cover the day, several full stories and the area you travel to. It ends with a simple way to check your availability.

*2*“photographer” and the name of a wedding venue
: Couples-to-be look for images of the estate or château they have booked. If you have worked there, a story published with the venue's name answers exactly that search. No directory has this content.

*3*“professional portrait photographer” and a town
: A freelancer or a manager needs a portrait for their website or profile. They want to know how long the session lasts, where it takes place and how many images are delivered. A short, precise page is enough, with a few recent portraits.

*4*“corporate photographer” or “corporate photo shoot” and a town
: The manager searching for this has a dated need: a new website, a report, an event. They check whether you have already photographed workshops, teams or products. Show examples by type of commission and explain the usage rights.

*5*“family photo shoot” or “newborn photographer” and a town
: These searches are frequent and local. The Google map takes up a lot of room in them. An up-to-date profile, with recent photos and reviews that mention the type of session, makes you visible there.

*6*“wedding photographer prices”
: Couples want to know whether you fit their budget before they write. Publishing your packages, or at least a starting price, spares you exchanges that go nowhere. It is also information that platforms rarely give clearly.

What works

## A photographer's five levers.

Lever 1

### One page per speciality

Weddings, portraits and corporate photography are not aimed at the same people. Each of these activities has its own page, vocabulary, examples and price. A head of communications shouldn't have to wade through three wedding galleries to find your workshop shoots.

Lever 2

### Full stories, located and told

I have you publish complete series rather than a selection of your best images. Each series has its title, its place, its season and a few lines on how it unfolded. That text is what lets Google connect the page to a search.

Lever 3

### Images that are described and light

Every important photo gets a clear file name and a short description. I also have the file sizes reduced and their loading tuned. A slow photographer's website loses its mobile visitors before the first image.

Lever 4

### The photographer's Google Business Profile

It matters for family shoots, portraits and local searches. I check the category, the service area, the photos and the links to your pages. If you have a studio, the address and appointment hours are on it.

Lever 5

### Links from venues and suppliers

A wedding venue, a caterer or a corporate client can mention your name and link to your website. These local links fit your business. I help you ask for them simply, in exchange for the images you already provide them.

What costs dearly

## The mistakes I see on photographers' websites.

Mistake 1

### A portfolio that mixes everything

A “Gallery” page where a wedding, a newborn and a factory follow one another matches no search. Visitors can't tell what you do first and foremost. Neither can Google.

Mistake 2

### Files named by the camera

A string of letters and numbers says nothing about the image. A readable name and a description of a few words give Google something to understand the photo with and show it in image search.

Mistake 3

### No prices, no packages

With no reference point, some visitors leave and the rest write to ask what the website could have told them. Giving a starting point filters enquiries and saves you time.

Mistake 4

### A website built on a heavy template

Some templates load every image at once, in full resolution. The page takes long seconds to open. I first check whether adjusting the settings is enough, before talking about changing tools.

The method

## What I put in place for a photographer.

Four steps, which I carry out with you. Choosing the images stays your job, I take care of what surrounds them.

1. **Sorting.** You tell me which commissions you want more of. I identify the searches that lead to them.
2. **Structure.** I reorganise the website by speciality and prepare a template for story pages.
3. **Stories.** You choose the series. Together we write the titles, the places and the few lines of context.
4. **Reporting.** I log the quote requests received, their speciality and the page they came from, at the end of the engagement or every month if we keep working together.

One-minute test

## Is SEO right for you?

Five frank questions to find out whether support makes sense in your situation. Sometimes the answer is no, and I'll tell you.

Close to home

## Professional photography in Charente.

Charente has many wedding venues: manor houses, estates in the middle of the vineyards, halls by the river. It also has businesses that need images, around Angoulême and in the cognac industry. National directories ignore these places. With Newp, which I co-founded in the département, I build your pages around them.

### Angoulême: portraits, businesses and events

Requests for professional portraits and corporate shoots are concentrated in the urban area. A page that names Angoulême, your studio or the area you travel to, with examples by type of commission, answers these searches.

### Cognac: the houses, the estates and their images

Around Cognac, businesses in the industry commission photos of cellars, craftsmanship and products. If you do this work, give it a simple page, with examples published with your clients' agreement.

### The villages and the vineyards: wedding season

From Jarnac to Barbezieux, receptions take place in properties that couples search for by name. Every story published with the venue and the town becomes a way into your website.

Beyond Google

## What AI changes for a photographer.

Couples and businesses also ask an AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Mistral. An example: “we're getting married in June at an estate near Cognac, which photographer knows this kind of venue?”. The AI doesn't see your images. It reads what is written around them.

So a photographer's website with no text has nothing to offer it. A story titled “June wedding at a wine estate near Cognac”, followed by a few lines on the light, how the day unfolded and the venue, gives it facts it can reuse. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the websites of the venues where you work complete the picture. I make sure they all describe your business in the same words.

Question asked to an AIWe're getting married in June at an estate near Cognac. Which photographer knows this kind of venue?

Answer

Three ways to find your photographer:

1. **Our client**— wedding photographer in Charente: stories published at wine estates near Cognac, the day's schedule described, packages and starting prices shown, reviews from couples that mention the venue.
2. — directory of wedding suppliers, profiles ranked by price.
3. — matchmaking platform, photographer assigned after the request.

Three typical cases

## Three photographers, three ways to get started.

These three photographers are textbook cases I made up. They match three formats, from a one-off helping hand to monthly support. The right format depends on your commissions, not on the size of your website.

### A family photographer just starting out, with no studio

To start: an audit of the Google Business Profile, and the website can wait.

1. Set the category and the service area.
2. Add recent photos, sorted by type of session.
3. Ask the families already photographed for a review.

### A wedding photographer whose website is just a gallery

To start: a few hours of coaching, or a short training course to do it himself.

1. Learn to publish a story with its venue and season.
2. Name and lighten his images before putting them online.
3. Write the wedding page together, with a starting price.

### A photographer who sells prints online and runs workshops

To go further: monthly support, because the website sells.

1. Split the website by activity: commissions, prints, workshops.
2. Rework the print product pages and the workshop pages, with the dates.
3. Log quote requests, sales and sign-ups every month.

In practice

## What you get.

- An audit of your Google Business Profile, most useful for family and portrait work
- A few hours of coaching to publish your stories yourself
- A short training course on images: file names, descriptions, file size
- A story page template, ready to fill in after each commission
- Monthly support for those who sell prints online, run workshops or have several specialities

Pricing

## How much does an SEO consultant cost?

The fee depends on four things. I give you a precise amount after a free first thirty-minute conversation.

- The size of the site: ten pages or ten thousand
- The competition on your queries
- What you can do in-house, and what needs producing for you
- The pace you want

FAQ

## SEO and photography: your questions.

Can I stand out alongside the wedding directories?

Yes, on different searches from theirs. They hold “wedding photographer” at national level. They are absent from searches that mention a venue, a style or a small town. I target those searches, and I don't promise you any ranking.

Should I leave the matchmaking platforms?

Not necessarily. If they bring you profitable commissions, keep them. I suggest counting what each source brings you, then deciding. The website, on the other hand, stays yours whatever happens.

I don't like writing. Who writes the texts?

You tell me about the shoot in a few sentences, out loud if you prefer. My team puts these notes into shape. You proofread, because they are your images and your tone.

Won't text spoil the layout?

No, if it is well placed. A title, a line for the venue and a short paragraph under the first image are enough. The rest of the page belongs to the photos. I work with your design, not against it.

I work alone and my budget is limited. Where should I start?

With a short format: an audit of your Google Business Profile, a few hours of coaching, or a short training course to learn how to publish your stories. If your commissions already come through word of mouth and your diary suits you, SEO isn't urgent, and I'll tell you so. Monthly support makes sense when you open up another speciality, sell prints online or offer workshops.

Should I show my prices?

It's your call. My view is that a starting price or a range avoids plenty of pointless messages. Those who write to you afterwards already know what to expect.

Can I publish my clients' photos?

Only with their consent, and it's up to you to obtain it in your contracts. For businesses, also check what the transfer of rights provides for. I put nothing online without your go-ahead.

How many stories should I publish?

Five complete, well-described series are better than fifty isolated images. After that, one story added after each notable commission is enough to keep the website alive.

How long before we see an effect?

The Google Business Profile can change within a few weeks. Story pages take several months to settle in, and weddings are booked well in advance. I set no deadline. With monthly support, you see the figures at each monthly report.

Do you know websites where images matter?

Yes. I run my own online shops, where each product sells first through its photo. I deal with the same questions of file size, file names and descriptions there. I have been doing SEO for fifteen years.
