SEO for driving schools: sign-ups from learners who live near your branch.

Signing up for driving lessons is often a two-person decision. The learner checks the reviews on their phone. The parent, who pays, compares packages and prices on a computer. Both first see online platforms and comparison sites, with teaser prices. I work on your Google Business Profile and your website so that your driving school speaks to both, with what a remote offer can't show: your instructors, your cars, your branch.

  1. Rattle your competitors.
  2. Overtake them.
  3. Protect you from their attacks.

Seven results, only one theory classroom

A parent is looking for a driving school in Cognac for their daughter. The first six results are online platforms, comparison sites and a directory. Your school is seventh. It's the only one with a branch, cars and instructors in the town. Move it up.

What this means for you. I write on your page what a platform can't show: your address, your instructors, your pick-up points and the details of your packages.

What is SEO for a driving school?

SEO for a driving school is the work that makes a driving instruction business appear on Google when a future learner or a parent looks for lessons near home. It relies on an active Google Business Profile, one page per package (standard licence, accompanied driving, automatic, motorbike, theory) and learner reviews. It is measured by sign-up requests and calls received by the office.

The problem

What makes life hard for driving schools.

Symptom 1

Online platforms show a teaser price

They advertise a low package and sign-up in a few minutes. The learner compares that figure with your full package without seeing what it includes. If your website doesn't spell anything out, the comparison goes against you.

Symptom 2

Two readers, two expectations

The teenager wants to know whether the instructors are nice and whether they'll get lessons quickly. The parent wants a total cost, a timetable and someone to talk to. A website written for only one of them loses the other.

Symptom 3

Sign-ups bunched into a few weeks

Requests pile up before the summer and at the start of the school year. The rest of the year, the schedule has gaps. The packages that could fill them, such as licences for adults or automatic cars, often have no page.

An audit, for real

What I see in thirty seconds on a driving school's website.

The site below doesn't exist, but its flaws do: they're the five I spot most often. Hover over a number.

Fig. 2. Fictional site, reconstructed. Any resemblance to yours would be a good reason to call me.

  1. 1A page title that names no town“Welcome | Driving school” fits every school. “Driving school in Cognac: licence, accompanied driving, automatic” puts yours on the map.
  2. 2“Prices on request” in the menuIt's the first page the parent opens. If they find no price there, they go back to comparing elsewhere.
  3. 3A slogan seen on every shopfront“Your success, our priority” says nothing about your packages or your hours. Write what you teach and where.
  4. 4A smiling teenager who isn't your learnerThe photo comes from a stock library. Your cars and your instructors, in front of your branch, make you recognisable in the street.
  5. 5Three packages, three times “Info”No block gives a duration, a price or a date. Each package should open a full page with a sign-up button.

What your customers type

What learners and their parents type.

Six example searches, to show who is searching and what they expect. The real volumes for your town are established during the audit.

1“driving school” followed by the name of their town
The map answers before anything else, and reviews decide the click. Your profile needs to show accurate office hours, photos of the cars and replies to reviews.
2“driving licence price” followed by their town
This is often the parent. They want to understand what a package includes and what gets added afterwards. A pricing page itemises every line and says how an extra lesson is charged.
3“accompanied driving sign-up”
The decision is made as a family, sometimes well in advance. A dedicated page describes the course step by step and the role of the accompanying adult, without copying out the official conditions.
4“automatic licence” followed by their town
They want a simpler route, or they only need that gearbox. If you have a suitable car, a separate page captures demand that few schools describe.
5“intensive driving course reviews”
They're in a hurry, for a job or a training course. They want dates, not a promise. An intensive course page shows your next sessions and points out that the test date doesn't depend on you alone.
6“paying for a driving licence”
Budget is the obstacle. They're looking for solutions. A funding page says that help exists, that you assist with the paperwork if that's the case, and points to the official websites for the conditions.

What works

The five levers of a driving school.

Lever 1

The Google Business Profile and replies to reviews

For a driving school, reviews carry a lot of weight, and they are sometimes harsh after a failed test. I set up the profile, then suggest a way to reply: short, factual, without giving any information about the learner. A calm reply reassures the parent reading it.

Lever 2

One page per package

Standard licence, accompanied driving, automatic, motorbike, trailer, theory only, refresher lessons: each package has its own audience and its own searches. Each page says who it's for, how it works and how much it costs.

Lever 3

The pricing page, line by line

Against a teaser price online, your answer is detail. Hours included, admin fees, support on test day, price of an extra lesson: it's all written down. The parent then compares two complete offers, not one figure against another.

Lever 4

Instructors and cars

The learner is going to spend many hours with one person in a car. Show both. A photo of each instructor with a few words, the cars, the theory room, the meeting point: a remote platform has nothing like that to show.

Lever 5

Pick-up points

Many learners have no means of transport. If you pick them up outside a secondary school, a station or in a neighbouring town, say so. This information often decides between two schools, and it helps your local SEO too.

What costs dearly

The mistakes I see on driving school websites.

Mistake 1

A pass rate shown with no source or date

The figure catches the eye and will be held against you if it can't be checked. Only publish it with its origin and year, in line with the rules that apply to your profession.

Mistake 2

“Prices on request”

The parent doesn't ask. They open the next tab, where a price is shown. Even a range is better than an empty page.

Mistake 3

A website designed for desktop

The learner discovers you on their phone, between lessons. If the sign-up button is unreadable on a small screen, that's where it ends.

Mistake 4

Motorbikes forgotten in a corner

If you teach motorbike or scooter riding, it's a different clientele, often adults, who show up when the weather turns nice. It deserves its own menu entry and its own photos.

The method

What I put in place for a driving school.

Four steps, in the order they're useful. The first is done before the next wave of sign-ups.

  1. Profile and reviews. Office hours, photos, services and replies to pending reviews.
  2. Prices. A page that itemises every package and every extra.
  3. Packages. A page for every licence or course you offer.
  4. Sign-ups. Every month, I record requests by package and by source.

Is SEO right for you?

Five frank questions to find out whether support makes sense in your situation. Sometimes the answer is no, and I'll tell you.

What it brings in

SEO you can count in euros.

A ranking doesn't pay a salary. What counts is what it brings: enquiries, customers, revenue. Move your page up and see what it could bring in.

Example assumptions, open to challenge: 600 searches a month for a driving school in your town, 5% of visitors make a request, one request in three signs (this varies a lot from one trade to another), €1,500 per client. Click-through rates by position are rough orders of magnitude, and they have been shifting since Google started showing AI answers above the results. Rerun the calculation with your own figures

Driving schools in Charente.

In Charente, distance matters: there's a fair bit of road between Angoulême, Cognac and small towns such as Jarnac, Barbezieux, Ruffec or Confolens. A future learner therefore searches for a driving school with the name of their town or their school. They want to know where the lessons take place and where you'll pick them up. Newp, the agency I co-founded, has its offices in Charente.

Angoulême, sixth-formers and students

The town brings together secondary schools and higher education. A learner who only lives there during the week looks for lessons at the end of the day. These hours and a meeting point near the schools are selling points worth writing down.

Cognac and the villages without a driving school

Around Cognac, a young person living in a vineyard village looks for the driving school that comes to pick them up or that's near their bus stop. Naming these villages on your website puts you in their searches.

A licence for work

An adult who needs a licence for a job looks for an intensive course or a refresher, with the name of their town. A page written for them, with no photo of a teenager, meets that need.

Beyond Google

What AI changes for a driving school.

Parents are starting to ask an AI like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Mistral for advice: “my daughter is going into Year 12, we live near Cognac, is accompanied driving better than the standard route, and which driving school should we choose?”. The answer compares the two routes in general terms, suggests reading the reviews, then sometimes names a few schools.

To cite a driving school, AI looks for concrete, consistent information: packages offered, towns served, published prices, recent reviews. It struggles to tell apart two schools that both write “quality training”. It more readily picks the one that says “accompanied driving and automatic in Cognac, pick-ups possible in neighbouring villages”. I write these details with you and carry them over to your profile and the directories.

Three typical cases

Three driving school situations.

These three schools are fictional. They show what I would do first depending on the situation.

A town-centre driving school with three instructors

Its sign-ups have been falling since the online offers arrived.

  1. Publish a detailed pricing page, package by package.
  2. Add instructor profiles and photos of the cars.
  3. Reply to every review on the Google Business Profile, including old ones.

A school based in a small town

It's the only one in its area and has just one line in a directory.

  1. Create the Google Business Profile and a short website: packages, prices, contact.
  2. List the villages where it picks up learners.
  3. Ask every learner who passes for a review.

A driving school that also teaches motorbike riding

The motorbike side stays small even though the track and the bikes are there.

  1. Write one page per motorbike course, with how it works and the timetable.
  2. Publish photos of the school's track and motorbikes.
  3. Highlight this course on the profile before spring.

In practice

What you get.

  • An up-to-date Google Business Profile, with a reply to every review
  • A pricing page that itemises your packages and extras
  • A page for every package you teach
  • Profiles of your instructors and photos of your cars
  • A monthly table of sign-up requests, by package

Pricing

How much does an SEO consultant cost?

The fee depends on four things. I give you a precise amount after a free first thirty-minute conversation.

  • The size of the site: ten pages or ten thousand
  • The competition on your queries
  • What you can do in-house, and what needs producing for you
  • The pace you want

FAQ

SEO and driving schools: your questions.

Can I compete with online driving schools on Google?

On their own keywords, such as “cheap driving licence”, it's difficult, and I don't promise it. On the name of your town, your packages and your reviews, you have real advantages. Those are the searches I work on.

My price is higher than the one shown online. Should I hide it?

No, you should explain it. A detailed package, with what it includes and what costs extra, can be compared fairly. A hidden price lets the visitor imagine a higher figure.

What should I do about reviews from unhappy learners after a failed test?

Reply once, without arguing and without discussing the learner's file. Readers know people fail tests. What they mainly look at is the school's tone. I prepare reply templates for you.

Can I show my pass rate?

If you do, give the source and the period, and follow the publication rules specific to your profession. I don't calculate or change this figure. I only check that it's presented clearly.

How can I talk about funding help without getting it wrong?

By keeping it general. The page says that funding exists, that you help with the paperwork if that's the case, and points to the official websites. Amounts and conditions aren't included, because they change.

Should I offer online sign-up?

A simple pre-registration helps: name, package wanted, phone number. The full file is then completed with your office. What matters is that the learner can take the first step one evening, when the office is closed.

Isn't social media enough to reach young people?

It helps learners get to know you. The parent, however, goes through Google and reads your website before paying. The two complement each other, and the website remains the place where the prices and packages are.

I have two branches in two towns. How should I organise things?

One Google Business Profile per branch, with its own address and its own opening hours, and one page per branch on the website. The packages are shared; the practical information is kept separate.

Test waiting times don't depend on me. Should I mention them?

Yes, simply. Learners ask about it on the very first call. Explaining how you put your candidates forward, without announcing a waiting time you don't control, avoids disappointment and bitter reviews.

When should I start to be ready before the summer?

Several months before. A page needs time to settle into the results, and I guarantee no date. The Google Business Profile and the pricing page, however, can be fixed in a few days.
