SEO for landscapers: garden design enquiries in the towns where you work.

A homeowner who wants to redo their garden starts by looking at pictures, then searches for a landscaper near them. On their screen, they find home-services platforms, garden centre chains and quote sites. These players are numerous and rank well. None of them can show a garden designed and planted by you, three villages away. I build your Google Business Profile and your site around that proof.

  1. Rattle your competitors.
  2. Overtake them.
  3. Protect you from their attacks.

A couple have just bought a house near Jarnac and want to redo the garden. They type their search and find a platform, chains, a magazine and a quote site. Your company, which has created several gardens in the area, comes seventh. Move it back up.

What is SEO for a landscaper?

SEO for a landscaper is the work that makes a landscaping business visible on Google when a homeowner in its area wants to create, redesign or maintain a garden. It clearly separates design and maintenance, which have neither the same customers nor the same searches. It relies on the Google Business Profile, one page per type of feature and photographed, located projects. It is measured by the visit requests received for the work you want to do.

The problem

What gets in the way for landscapers.

Symptom 1

People call you to mow, not to design

The word “landscaper” covers everything, from mowing to designing a complete garden. If your site doesn't make the distinction, you mostly get requests for small maintenance jobs. Landscaping projects go to those who show projects.

Symptom 2

Services platforms take the maintenance work

On “garden maintenance” or “hedge trimming”, lead-generation sites and home-services networks are very present. They compete on hourly rates. A local landscaper has no interest in following them onto that ground.

Symptom 3

Photos everywhere, except where Google reads them

Your successful jobs are on your phone or on a social network. On the site, there's a gallery with no text. Google doesn't understand an image without a caption, and visitors don't know where the garden is.

An audit, for real

What I see in thirty seconds on a landscaper's website.

The site below doesn't exist, but its flaws do: they're the five I spot most often. Hover over a number.

Fig. 2. Fictional site, reconstructed. Any resemblance to yours would be a good reason to call me.

  1. 1A “Landscaper | Green spaces” titleYou can't tell where or what. “Landscaper in Cognac: garden design, terraces, year-round maintenance” covers three searches.
  2. 2A “Gallery” instead of projectsForty-eight images with no text are read by nobody. Ten garden pages, with the town and the plants, get found on Google.
  3. 3“Green spaces”, the language of public tendersA homeowner says “garden”. Use their word, then say what you do there.
  4. 4A perfect lawn under a blue skyThat lawn didn't grow in Charente. Show a garden you planted, in the season when it looks its best.
  5. 5Design and maintenance given equal billingVisitors don't know what you prefer to do. Highlight the activity you want to develop.

What your customers type

What a homeowner thinking about their garden types.

Six searches you come across in this trade, given as examples. The exact terms and their weight in your area will be established during the audit.

1“landscaper” followed by the name of their town
A very broad search, mixing design and maintenance. The map answers it first. Your profile must say from the first line what your priority is, and show finished gardens.
2“garden landscaping” or “garden design” and a town
This is a considered project, often after buying or building a house. The homeowner compares for weeks. They need a page describing your approach: visit, plan, quote, planting, follow-up.
3“wooden decking” or “stabilised gravel path”
They are looking for a specific feature and aren't necessarily thinking of a landscaper. One page per feature, with your materials and projects, puts you in front of them before the materials seller.
4“landscaping a sloping garden” or “garden without watering”
They have a constraint and are looking for ideas. A practical article, illustrated by one of your jobs, shows them you have already solved this problem. They keep you in mind for later.
5“garden maintenance contract” or “grounds maintenance”
This is the maintenance work you want: regular, year-round, for a large garden, a residential block or a business. A dedicated page sets out the frequency, the work included and the type of sites you take on.
6“tree surgery” or “tree felling” and a town
A one-off request, sometimes urgent after a storm. If you do this work, it deserves a page and a category on the profile. If not, don't mention it.

What works

The five levers for a landscaping business.

Lever 1

Separate design and maintenance

Two menu items, two sets of pages, two messages. A homeowner wanting a new garden doesn't read the same thing as a property manager looking for an annual contract. This separation sorts out most poorly targeted enquiries.

Lever 2

One page per project

Each finished garden becomes a page: the town, the approximate area, the original brief, the plants and materials, a few photos. These pages feed local searches and show your style better than an introductory text.

Lever 3

The same gardens, a year later

A garden is judged once it has grown. Going back to photograph a job the following season gives you proof that neither a platform nor a chain can provide. I build these return visits into the schedule.

Lever 4

The Google Business Profile, kept up through the seasons

Recent photos, posts before the planting and pruning seasons, the right categories. The profile is often seen before the site. I update it with what you send me from the field.

Lever 5

One page per feature

Terrace, fencing, path, pond, irrigation, turfing, hard landscaping: each one matches a search. These pages attract homeowners with a specific need, who then discover you can design the whole garden.

What costs dearly

The mistakes I often see on landscapers' websites.

Mistake 1

A gallery of fifty photos without a word

Visitors scroll and remember nothing. Google only sees files. Ten described projects do more work than fifty silent images.

Mistake 2

Photos of gardens that aren't yours

Stock images show gardens from another climate. Customers can tell. A phone photo taken in a garden in the area is more convincing.

Mistake 3

Keeping everything on social media

Your posts disappear there within a few days and don't show up on Google. Every job posted there should also have its page on your site.

Mistake 4

Redoing the site in spring

That's when searches rise and you no longer have time. Work on the site is done in winter, so it's in place when homeowners head back out into their gardens.

The method

What I put in place for a landscaper.

Four steps, arranged around your seasons. Winter is for writing, spring and autumn are for taking photos.

  1. The sorting. You tell me which work you want to develop and which you no longer want.
  2. The projects. We choose ten gardens, and I turn them into pages with your photos and explanations.
  3. The features. One page for each type of work chosen, linked to the projects that illustrate it.
  4. The calendar. Profile posts before each season, and a monthly record of enquiries by type of work.

Is SEO right for you?

Five frank questions to find out whether support makes sense in your situation. Sometimes the answer is no, and I'll tell you.

What it brings in

SEO you can count in euros.

A ranking doesn't pay a salary. What counts is what it brings: enquiries, customers, revenue. Move your page up and see what it could bring in.

Example assumptions, open to challenge: 400 searches a month for a landscaper in your area, 4% of visitors make an enquiry, one enquiry in three is signed (this varies a lot from one trade to another), €3,500 per customer. Click-through rates by position are rough orders of magnitude, and they have been shifting since Google started showing AI answers above the results. Run the numbers with your own figures

Close to home

Landscaping in Charente.

In Charente, the detached house with a garden is common, in town as in the villages. Chalky soil and dry summers guide the choice of plants. Homeowners search for a landscaper with the name of their town or the nearest town, and want to see gardens like theirs. National platforms, for their part, offer gardeners by the hour, with no connection to the local terrain. Projects located in the département make the difference.

Around Angoulême: housing estates and new builds

In the towns around Angoulême, the owner of a new house starts from bare ground. They want a fence, a terrace, a lawn and a few trees. A page dedicated to the garden of a new-build house speaks to them directly.

Around Cognac: estates and their grounds

Estates and manor houses have grounds to maintain and sometimes to redesign. These customers want a reliable contact for year-round care. The maintenance contract page should be aimed at them.

In the villages: courtyards, low walls and second-home gardens

In a village house, the garden is often a courtyard enclosed by stone walls. The owner isn't always there. They choose from photos and want news of the work. A clear site and located projects win them over.

Beyond Google

What AI changes for a landscaper.

Homeowners describe their plot to an AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Mistral and ask for advice. For example: “I have a south-facing sloping garden near Cognac, chalky soil, I want little watering, what should I plant and who can do it?”. The AI suggests plants and landscaping principles, then sometimes companies.

It picks those whose site describes cases close to the question. A project titled “Dry garden on a sloping plot, near Cognac”, with the plant list and the reason for each choice, matches exactly what it is looking for. A gallery with no text is invisible to it. That's why I get you to tell the story of your jobs instead of simply showing them.

Three typical cases

Three landscaper scenarios.

Here are three imaginary profiles, chosen because they come up often in the trade. None describes a business I know. Your own priority will be set after the audit.

A sole landscaper, swamped by mowing

He would like to do design work, but his schedule is full of small maintenance jobs.

  1. Rewrite the home page around garden landscaping.
  2. Publish five projects, even modest ones, with the town and the plants.
  3. State clearly the type of maintenance he still accepts.

A six-person business, design and maintenance

The two activities are mixed up on the site and on the profile.

  1. Create two separate paths in the menu.
  2. Write a maintenance contract page for residential blocks and businesses.
  3. Schedule a profile post before each planting season.

A landscaper who also builds terraces and fences

These features sell well, but nobody knows he does them.

  1. Create a terrace page and a fencing page, with the materials used.
  2. Add these services to the Google Business Profile.
  3. Photograph each finished feature, then again a year later.

In practice

What you get.

  • A site organised into two paths: design and maintenance
  • Ten projects turned into pages, with town, plants and materials
  • One page per type of feature you want to sell
  • A Google Business Profile updated before each season
  • A monthly record of enquiries, sorted by type of work

Pricing

How much does an SEO consultant cost?

The fee depends on four things. I give you a precise amount after a free first thirty-minute conversation.

  • The size of the site: ten pages or ten thousand
  • The competition on your queries
  • What you can do in-house, and what needs producing for you
  • The pace you want

FAQ

SEO and landscaping: your questions.

I want design projects, not mowing. Is that possible?

It's a request I hear often, and it's the first adjustment I make. We target landscaping and feature searches, show gardens created, and write down what you no longer take on. Enquiries change with the site's content.

How do I hold my own against platforms offering gardeners by the hour?

By not selling the same thing. They sell an hour of work. You sell a designed garden, plants chosen for the plot and follow-up. The site must carry that difference on every page.

My photos are taken on a phone. Is that enough?

Yes, if they are sharp, taken in daylight, with one wide shot and two details. I give you a simple method to apply at the end of each job. The caption and text matter as much as the image quality.

I already post on social media. Isn't that enough?

It keeps the connection with those who already follow you. Someone typing “landscaper” and their town into Google doesn't see those posts. I reuse your content to turn it into lasting pages.

When should the work start?

In late autumn or winter, when you have a bit of time and searches are low. The pages are then in place for spring. We can start at another time, knowing the effect will come later.

Can I show a customer's garden?

With their agreement, and without giving their address. The town name is enough. Most customers are happy to agree when they like the garden. I give you a simple sentence to ask them.

Should I mention tax benefits linked to maintenance?

I write nothing about tax without a source you provide. If you are eligible, we use the exact terms from your documents, and you approve. I prefer an accurate sentence to an approximate argument.

How long before I see enquiries?

Changes to the Google Business Profile usually show within a few weeks. Project and feature pages take a season or two. I don't promise rankings. You follow the trend in enquiries month after month.

You're not in the trade. How do you write about plants?

I make nothing up. You describe the job to me in a voice message, the Newp team shapes it, and you review. Plant names and technical choices always come from you.

Are you used to working with lots of images?

Yes. I run my own online shops, where photos do a large part of the work. Naming images, describing them and making them lighter so they load fast is a task I know from the inside.
